We Had Other Words

Twelve fictional lives · 1932–2026

Twelve songs follow the changing cost of ordinary words between men. A cinema seat, a coat, a cassette and two coffee mugs become measures of intimacy and permission.

Inside the work.

The protagonists are fictional. The project situates their lives within researched British queer history, while resisting a simple progression from repression to freedom. Its central concern is how much translation love requires in different rooms, relationships and periods.
